Beavers will sit on their tails to access waterproofing oils through their cloacas. In addition, anal glands secrete the oils through skin pores to hair roots. From there it is distributed with the front feet, teeth and grooming claws over the whole body to keep the fur sleek, oily, and water-repellent. Here is a very cool video of a beaver grooming its fur that I filmed earlier this summer. The video gives an up close look at the beaver’s incisors. Their incisors are orange because the outer enamel has a high iron content, which give the teeth strength for chewing through wood. This beaver is using one of its hind feet to groom.
